Kate Matthews Collection

The Kate Matthews Collection (http://digital.library.louisville.edu/collections/matthews ) celebrates a pioneering woman photographer of Pewee Valley, Kentucky. Best known for her photographs depicting characters in the "Little Colonel" series of children's books written by her friend and neighbor Annie Fellows Johnston, Matthews relied almost exclusively on her own community and acquaintances as subjects, and her photographs represent her interests in costume studies, literary allegory, and scenes of everyday life in the early 20th century. The release of this digital collection coincides with a three-month celebration of Annie Fellows Johnston by the Oldham County Historical Society, Pewee Valley Historical Society, Samuel Culbertson Mansion Bed and Breakfast, Western Kentucky University, and University of Louisville. Through February 16, 2008, photographs by Matthews and books by Johnston are on exhibit in Kentucky Idyll: Kate Matthews and Annie Fellows Johnston in the University of Louisville’s Special Collections galleries on the lower level of Ekstrom Library.
